“The cultivation of generosity is the beginning of spiritual awakening. Generosity has tremendous force because it arises from an inner quality of letting go. Being able to let go, to give up, to renounce, and to give generously all spring from the same source, and when we practice generosity, dāna, we open up these qualities within ourselves. Letting go gives us profound freedom and many loving ways to express that freedom. Generosity is the beginning of the path. When the Buddha taught, he always began with generosity.” ~Sharon Salzberg

Donations to Vipassana Metta Foundation and Teachers

Vipassana Metta Foundation (VMF) and their teachers have chosen to continue the ancient tradition of offering the teachings on a dāna (donation) basis. They are solely supported by the dāna offered for the teachings. VMF is a 501(c) (3) non-profit corporation; all donations to VMF are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Please remember, even the smallest act of generosity is an expression of dāna. We are deeply grateful for all your acts of generosity.

Stock Transfers
The benefits of offering a gift of appreciated assets, such as stock, are two-fold. You can receive a tax deduction for the asset’s full market value at the time of donating. You can also avoid paying any capital gains tax you might otherwise incur from the sale, ensuring that more of your gift reaches VMF. Please consult first, however, with your tax advisor to understand your specific situation.

IRA Gifts
Generally, beginning at age 72, retirement account holders are required to take Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) from their tax-deferred retirement accounts like IRAs. You must pay taxes on the taxable amounts of these distributions.

If you find you don’t need all the funds, consider making an IRA qualified charitable distribution (QCD), also known as an IRA charitable rollover. You can distribute up to $100,000 directly from a Traditional IRA to qualified charities each year. QCDs can count toward your RMD and won’t be included in your taxable income–potentially reducing your taxes and ensuring that the entirety of your gift reaches VMF.

You can also name VMF as the beneficiary of your IRA, 401K, or other qualified retirement plan.

Contact your plan administrator for more information on how to give.

Donate Through a Donor Advised Fund
Donor-advised funds (DAFs) are an increasingly popular charitable giving vehicle. If you hold a DAF account, please consider recommending VMF for a grant.
